With 35+ years of martial arts experience, Sensei Luis Costa is a certified black belt in both Cuong Nhu and Shotokan Karate. His journey in martial arts began as a student and has evolved into a lifelong commitment to teaching and mentorship. Growing up, Sensei Luis discovered that martial arts offered more than physical techniques—it was a path to character development, self-discovery, and genuine confidence. This realization shaped his entire approach to instruction.
In 2009, Sensei Luis founded CTX Martial Arts to create a space where students of all ages could develop not just martial arts skills, but character, discipline, and confidence. His teaching philosophy centers on Kyori-Do Karate—a revolutionary system that emphasizes timing, distance, and positioning over brute force. This means a 7-year-old girl is as effective as a much larger opponent. A 60-year-old can master self-defense without relying on strength. Strategy and intelligence defeat aggression and size. This philosophy has transformed countless lives, proving that martial arts success doesn't depend on being the biggest, strongest, or most athletic. It depends on understanding principle, practice, and persistence.
Over the years, Sensei Luis has developed a unique approach to instruction that honors both traditional martial arts principles and modern understanding of how people learn. He recognizes that children learn through play and story, teenagers need challenge and community, and adults seek transformational experiences. His curriculum adapts to each life stage while maintaining core principles of discipline, respect, and excellence. This flexibility has made CTX accessible and effective for students from ages 4 to 70+.
Sensei Luis believes that the role of a martial arts instructor extends beyond technique instruction. He sees himself as a mentor and guide in his students' personal development journeys. He has mentored dozens of instructors, many of whom have started their own schools or moved into other leadership roles in their communities. His legacy isn't just in the students he's trained, but in the instructors and leaders he's developed who carry forward the values of excellence, respect, and integrity.
Today, CTX Martial Arts has trained over 500 students and counting, with many achieving black belt status and becoming instructors themselves. Sensei Luis continues to lead classes, mentor instructors, and guide the next generation of martial artists. His commitment to continuous improvement means he's always studying, always learning, always seeking ways to serve his students better. In many ways, Sensei Luis embodies the martial arts principle of the perpetual student—no matter how much you accomplish, there's always more to learn and ways to grow.
