About CTX Martial Arts

Founded on principles of discipline, excellence, and community, we've been training martial artists in Kendall, Miami for over 15 years.

Founded by Sensei Luis Costa with 35+ years of martial arts expertise, CTX Martial Arts brings a philosophy-driven approach to karate: Kyori-Do. Rather than relying on brute force, our system teaches timing, distance, and intelligence—transforming students of all ages into confident, capable martial artists. We believe authentic martial arts training builds not just physical skill, but character, discipline, and resilience. Since 2009, CTX Martial Arts has served as Kendall and Miami's premier martial arts school, training over 300 students ranging from ages 4 to 70+. Our mission extends far beyond teaching kicks and punches. We create a welcoming community where students discover their potential, build genuine confidence, and develop the discipline and character that serves them throughout their lives. Every student—whether a shy 4-year-old taking their first class or an adult returning to martial arts after decades—is valued and celebrated for their unique journey. What makes CTX different is our commitment to the Kyori-Do philosophy and our understanding that martial arts is ultimately about personal transformation. We don't believe in one-size-fits-all instruction. Instead, our experienced instructors adapt their teaching to meet each student where they are, respect their starting point, and help them progress toward their authentic goals. Whether your child wants to build confidence, you're seeking stress relief and fitness, or you're pursuing black belt achievement, we create an environment where that success is possible.

Luis Costa

Sensei & Founder

With 35+ years of martial arts experience, Sensei Luis Costa is a certified black belt in both Cuong Nhu and Shotokan Karate. His journey in martial arts began as a student and has evolved into a lifelong commitment to teaching and mentorship. Growing up, Sensei Luis discovered that martial arts offered more than physical techniques—it was a path to character development, self-discovery, and genuine confidence. This realization shaped his entire approach to instruction.

In 2009, Sensei Luis founded CTX Martial Arts to create a space where students of all ages could develop not just martial arts skills, but character, discipline, and confidence. His teaching philosophy centers on Kyori-Do Karate—a revolutionary system that emphasizes timing, distance, and positioning over brute force. This means a 7-year-old girl is as effective as a much larger opponent. A 60-year-old can master self-defense without relying on strength. Strategy and intelligence defeat aggression and size. This philosophy has transformed countless lives, proving that martial arts success doesn't depend on being the biggest, strongest, or most athletic. It depends on understanding principle, practice, and persistence.

Over the years, Sensei Luis has developed a unique approach to instruction that honors both traditional martial arts principles and modern understanding of how people learn. He recognizes that children learn through play and story, teenagers need challenge and community, and adults seek transformational experiences. His curriculum adapts to each life stage while maintaining core principles of discipline, respect, and excellence. This flexibility has made CTX accessible and effective for students from ages 4 to 70+.

Sensei Luis believes that the role of a martial arts instructor extends beyond technique instruction. He sees himself as a mentor and guide in his students' personal development journeys. He has mentored dozens of instructors, many of whom have started their own schools or moved into other leadership roles in their communities. His legacy isn't just in the students he's trained, but in the instructors and leaders he's developed who carry forward the values of excellence, respect, and integrity.

Today, CTX Martial Arts has trained over 500 students and counting, with many achieving black belt status and becoming instructors themselves. Sensei Luis continues to lead classes, mentor instructors, and guide the next generation of martial artists. His commitment to continuous improvement means he's always studying, always learning, always seeking ways to serve his students better. In many ways, Sensei Luis embodies the martial arts principle of the perpetual student—no matter how much you accomplish, there's always more to learn and ways to grow.

Why Choose CTX Martial Arts

Our Mission

To empower students of all ages through martial arts training that develops physical skill, mental discipline, emotional resilience, and authentic character. We believe in creating a family-oriented community where every student—from the shyest 4-year-old to the most ambitious adult—is valued, challenged appropriately, and celebrated for their individual growth. Our ultimate goal is not black belts, but confident, disciplined, respectful individuals ready to succeed in every area of life.

Our Core Values

1

Discipline

Self-control and commitment to training, even when challenged. We teach that discipline is a skill you develop, not a trait you're born with. Through consistent practice, students learn to follow through on their commitments.

2

Respect

Honor for instructors, peers, ourselves, and the martial arts traditions we represent. Respect isn't just bowing in class—it's genuinely valuing every person's journey and potential.

3

Excellence

Striving to perfect our craft and continuously improve, not by comparing ourselves to others, but by being better than we were yesterday. Excellence means showing up, doing the work, and honoring our own potential.

4

Community

Supporting one another on the journey to mastery. We believe that individual growth and collective growth are connected. As you grow, you lift others up. As others succeed, you're inspired to achieve more.
